Golden Trumpet and Other Vines Can add Beauty to Your Garden

You can add texture and interest to your garden landscape with the use of exceptional shrubs and vines. Shrubs play an integral role in landscape design due to their functionality. Golden Trumpet Allamanda cathartica adds a colorful addition to your garden. The Golden Trumpet is an evergreen climbing shrub with large flowers shaped like a trumpet. The plant has fragrant hanging golden flowers that attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. The shrub is native to Brazil. In ideal conditions, it can grow to a height of 20 feet. It can also grow as a vine to decorate trellises, arbors, pergolas or can be allowed to grow in a container. The lovely flowers have been known to symbolize good fortune, positive energy and enlightenment or inner peace and wellness. The Golden Trumpet is a multi-stemmed evergreen woody vine with a twining and trailing habit of growth. Its average texture blends into the landscape. You can balance adding a Golden Trumpet to your yard by planting it near one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition. The Golden Trumpet requires minimal maintenance and may require occasional pruning to look its best. The Golden Trumpet makes a fine choice for the outdoor landscape, but it is also well-suited for use in outdoor pots and containers. Because of its spreading habit of growth, it is ideally suited for use as a ‘spiller’ in the ‘spiller-thriller-filler’ container combination; plant it near the edges where it can spill gracefully over the pot. It is also suitable to grow alone in a suitable container. When growing plants in outdoor containers and baskets, they may require more frequent watering than when planted in the ground.
Another attractive vine to consider for your garden is the Clematis. Green Thumb has varieties of this lovely vine to select from. One lovely selection is Picardy™ Clematis. This plant is a compact, dwarf variety with attractive, smoky red flowers with hints of lavender and a center of chestnut brown anthers; blooms from early to mid-summer; great for patio containers, hanging baskets, or covering fences and arbors. It has green deciduous foliage. Picardy™ Clematis is a multi-stemmed deciduous woody vine with a twining and trailing habit of growth. Its average texture blends into your landscape design. You can select to complement it with one or two trees or shrubs. Picardy™ Clematis requires limited maintenance. Dead and weak vines require trimming in late winter. After removing the dead vine branches, it is good to trim and shape the rest of the vine. The Clematis will attract hummingbirds to your yard. The Bleeding Heart Vine is another vine to consider for your garden. Bleeding Heart Vine has a striking cluster of dark red hooded flowers with white from late winter to late spring. It has green leaves. The oval leaves do not change color in the fall. Bleeding Heart Vine is a multi-stemmed deciduous woody vine with a twining and trailing habit of growth. This woody vine will require occasional maintenance and upkeep and needs pruning in late winter once the threat of cold temperatures has passed. This plant will help you attract birds, bees, and butterflies to your yard. Bleeding Heart Vine will grow to be about 12 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 30 inches. As a climbing vine, it tends to be leggy near the base and should be with low-growing plants. It does best when planted near a fence, trellis, or other landscape structure where you can train your Bleeding Heart to grow upwards on a wall or slope. This vine grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions will live for 40 years or more. Other popular vines in Southern California are Bougainvillea, Mandevilla, Star Jasmine and Honeysuckle.
The Barbara Karst Bougainvillea This vine has beautiful bright magenta flowers and glossy green foliage and creates a beautiful accent piece in your yard. This vine is drought tolerant once established; an ideal choice for arbors and patios; and can also be adapted as a houseplant.
Barbara Karst Bougainvillea will grow to be about 20 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 24 inches. As a climbing vine, it tends to be leggy near the base and can be planted along with low-growing plants. It looks nice when planted near a fence, trellis, or other landscape structure where your Bougainvillea will learn to climb upwards on a wall, slope, or trellis. It grows at a fast rate, and can live for approximately 20 years. This woody vine needs full sunlight. It prefers dry to average moisture levels with very well-drained soil and does not like being in standing water. It is drought-tolerant, and thus makes an ideal choice for xeriscaping or the moisture-conserving landscape. Madinia® White Mandevilla. This plant has glossy green foliage and flashy trumpet-shaped flowers. The Mandeville plant is a stunning low-maintenance option for endless summer color has showy bunches of flowers in shades of white, pink, red, yellow, and apricot that keep growing and producing more blooms. Native to Brazil, Mandeville is right at home on your Southern California sunny patio, where it will provide season-long color from early summer to the first frost. Its flowers attract hummingbirds and bees.
Red Cape Honeysuckle is another popular vine for Southern California gardens.
Red Cape Honeysuckle features showy clusters of lightly scented red trumpet-shaped flowers with orange overtones along the branches from mid-fall to late winter. It has attractive dark green evergreen foliage. The serrated pointy compound leaves are highly ornamental and remain dark green throughout the winter. This shrub will require occasional maintenance and upkeep and needs pruning only after flowering to avoid removing any of the current season’s flowers. It will attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to your yard. Red Cape Honeysuckle will grow to be about 16 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 8 feet. It has a low canopy with a typical clearance of 1 foot from the ground and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can live for approximately 20 years. This shrub does best in full sun to partial shade. Red Cape Honeysuckle plants do best when the soil is damp. It is important that your Honeysuckle plant does not dry out. Your Honeysuckle might need supplemental watering during periods of drought or extended heat.
